Caley O'Dwyer

Artist Bio:

Caley O’Dwyer is a visual artist, poet, and teacher living in Los Angeles. His painting practice is driven by postmodern psychology, humor, wonder and musicality, emphasizing uncertainty, process painting and surprise. Alongside his painting practice at the Brewery Arts Complex in downtown Los Angeles, Caley has taught creative writing and psychology at Antioch University Los Angeles, has been an academic advisor at AULA, and was previously an Associate Professor in University of Southern California’s Writing Program. He is a winner of an Academy of American Poets University Prize, a three-time
nominee for the Pushcart Prize, and a recipient of a Helene Wurlitzer grant for poetry.

Artist Statement:

My drawing and painting practice is driven by humor, wonder, musicality, joy,
love of the line, variation and possibility. In drawing, I'm drawn to clean, clear lines and the way lines form their own language. In painting, I’m interested in process, gestures that are sabotaged, partially recovered,
renewed…surprises pulled out of wrecks, pairings of surety and dissolution.
I’m inclined to seriousness as much as to silliness, to expressions of sadness
and doubt as much as to frivolity, delight, color that clashes and color that
sings. Mostly, I like to have fun.
