Andrew Roy

Artist's Statement:

Andrew Roy is an award-winning Santa Barbara artist. A member of both the Abstract Art Collective and the Santa Barbara Art Association, Andrew’s works are in private collections throughout the United States. Working with oil pastels on paper and also with acrylics on large canvases, Andrew’s paintings are vibrant, powerful, unique, and compelling.

Born and raised in Alaska, Andrew has traveled extensively throughout the United States and in six continents. Residing in Santa Barbara since 2012, Andrew previously lived not only in Alaska, but also in Hawaii, Texas, Washington, and Irvine California. Informed by experiences such as falling into a glacial crevasse, Andrew believes, like Oscar Wilde, that “Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known.”

Andrew’s abstract art evokes dreams, memories, joy, passion, despair, nature, longing, change, and beginnings. Like Alfred North Whitehead, Andrew feels that “Art flourishes where there is a sense of adventure, a sense of nothing having been done before, of complete freedom to experiment….” Andrew’s art communicates universally and intensely the desire to explore, feel, and connect.

Andrew has greatly enjoyed his experiences at Antioch University Santa Barbara. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from AUSB in 2020, and is currently working on his Masters in Clinical Psychology at AUSB. The environment at Antioch has truly supported Andrew’s artistic expressions and creativity. Andrew’s award-winning paintings have been shown in numerous galleries and shows in Santa Barbara and elsewhere including: Sullivan Goss, Westmont College, Gallery 113,
CASA, the Faulkner Gallery, ArtSEE/JCC, the International Art Gallery and the Channing Peake Gallery.
